prati più o meno densamente alberati. Osservandoli da una certa di-
stanza, la grande varietà di colori e portamenti degli esemplari presenti
nel parco rivela la notevole commistione di specie che caratterizza il
patrimonio arboreo del parco: le chiome scure e compatte delle co-
nifere (abeti, cedri, cipressi), quelle chiare e leggere di frassini, sofore e
aceri americani, e ancora platani, tigli, olmi, bagolari. Tra le specie più
rappresentate c’è sicuramente la farnia, che esibisce alcuni esemplari
monumentali in prossimità dell’ingresso e vicino al villino svizzero,
come pure il bagolaro e il tiglio, che accompagnano con filari singoli e
doppi una parte importante della viabilità dell’area.
Gli edifici
All’interno della storica area verde si trova una quarantina di fabbricati,
diversi per dimensione, epoca di costruzione e tipologia architettonica.
Nel 1918, l’ospedale contava già 24 fabbricati e poteva accogliere ben
1500 malati e un ulteriore sviluppo si ebbe tra il 1919 e il 1933, quan-
do furono costruite case popolari per il personale e i custodi (tuttora
esistenti). Gli edifici colpiscono per la varietà architettonica: a parte
una palazzina moderna, sede della sezione provinciale di ARPA Emi-
lia-Romagna, tutti gli altri fabbricati sono riconducibili alla passata
attività manicomiale e datano tra la metà dell’Ottocento e gli anni
’30 del Novecento, tanto da rappresentare una curiosa e interessan-
te rassegna degli stili architettonici che si sono succeduti nell’arco di
quasi un secolo. I padiglioni furono sviluppati su indicazioni dei medi-
ci psichiatri, partendo da rigide griglie di imbrigliamento che creano
topos architettonici estremamente regolari e circostanziati. La cella di
contenzione, avente dimensione in pianta di circa 3 metri per tre, co-
stituisce la maglia elementare di questa rete, che condiziona la plani-
metria interna dei padiglioni e la loro dislocazione urbanistica esterna.

sector, the regularity of the arrangement gives way to a more natural
organisation, with lawns densely wooded. By observing them from a
certain distance, the wide variety of colours and appearances of the ex-
emplars in the park reveals the remarkable mixture of species that char-
acterises the arboreal heritage of the park: the dark and compact foliage
of the coniferous trees – such as firs, cedars, cypresses - the pale and light
one of the ashes, sophora and maples, as well as plane trees, limes, elms
and Mediterranean hackberries. Among the most represented species
there’s certainly the common oak, that has some monumental exemplars
near the entrance close to the Swiss cottage, that runs along the road
system of the area through single and double rows.
The buildings
Inside the historical green area, almost forty buildings can be found,
which differ in dimension, time of construction and architectural ty-
pology. In 1918, the hospital already had 24 buildings and could host
1500 patients; a further development was carried out between 1919
and 1933, when public housings for the staff and the keepers were built
and are still in existence today.
The buildings strike for their architectural diversity. As a matter of fact,
besides only one modern facility, current seat of the provincial section
of ARPA Emilia-Romagna, all the remaining constructions are to be con-
nected to the past asylum-related activities and date back to the period
between the middle of the 19th century and 1930’s. They represent a pe-
culiar and interesting exhibit of the architectural styles occurring during
almost a century. The pavilions were built following the directions of psy-
chiatrists, starting from the rigid containment grids which create extreme-
ly regular and detailed architectural patterns. The containment cell, the
layout of which measures 3 square metres, represents the central element
