of this network, conditioning the pavilion’s internal planimetry of the and
their external urbanistic dislocation. The University occupies six pavilions
- Buccola-Bisi, Tamburini and Morselli pavilions for the faculty of Engi-
neering, De Sanctis and Livi pavilions are destined to the Faculty of Med-
icine, while the Besta pavilion houses the courses of Agricultural Studies.
The Buccola-Bisi pavilion
It was designed by engineer Artoni in 1932 under Bertolani’s man-
agement. It distinguished itself by its tripartite body, organised on the
typical H plant. Initially it housed laborious and quiet women who
were responsible for the looms for sewing clothes and uniforms for
the patients. Inside the pavilion were also located painting ateliers and
a library for the patients. In the decade of the 80s, it became a psych-
omotricity gym, accessible also by external citizens. In 2018, the 20
th
anniversary of the inauguration of the UNIMORE Faculty of Engi-
neering in Reggio Emilia, the pavilion was dedicated, in addition to
the psychiatrist Gabriele Buccola, to Professor Olmes Bisi, a physicist,
who was the first Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.
The Morselli pavilion
Always designed by engineer Artoni and completed in 1933, it is char-
acterised by a C-shaped layout with two lateral wings in a lower posi-
tion with respect to the central body. The exposed brick wall presents
typical decorative characters of a returning eclecticism of neo-man-
nerism inspiration. It represented a department for women. the first
admission and observation. During the admission, a first evaluation
of the patient’s condition was carried out, who, after the observation,
could be transferred to another ward or even dismissed.
